Sports Injury Physiotherapy
Gymea Physio Focus and Cronulla Physio Focus primarily assists in the full rehabilitation of athletes who suffer from injury or surgery. Our aim with all our sports physiotherapy clients is to help prevent further injuries by regaining their strength, flexibility, postural control and endurance.
We focus on rehabilitating athletes so that they can return to sport as safely as feasible and as quickly as is practical.
Sports physiotherapists need to be very skilled and have good treatment and rehabilitation skills. In order to heal athletes quickly and safely from injuries, they need to understand the many factors that can impact recovery.
It is important that sports physiotherapists have the skills and knowledge to help prevent injuries from occurring, and when injuries do occur, to perform a skilled and thorough evaluation of the injury. Sports physiotherapy involves being able to recognise when it is appropriate to protect injured tissues to aid in their recovery.
Knowing how to apply appropriate muscle stimulation to areas of injury or impairment to allow the injured tissue to heal properly and prevent further injuries is also an important skill for a good sports physio. Physiotherapists help athletes perform at their best, assisting them to recover from injuries and educating them on the best way to prevent more injuries.
Having an Understanding of the Physical Demands of the Sport
Gymea Physio Focus and Cronulla Physio Focus wants to help athletes return to sport as soon as safely and comfortably as is practicable. We aim to help athletes return to the levels of performance they had before the injury.
Ideally this is achieved by providing them with rehabilitation that enables them to return to their previous level of performance.
Being able to properly assess the extent of an injury, using appropriate treatment and rehabilitation techniques, is very important, as is having a good understanding of the sport and its demands. This allows for a rapid return to play and helps prevent further injuries.

Causes and Types of Sports Injuries
Sports injury can occur as a result of:
- Not warming up properly before exercise
- Pushing yourself too hard
- Inadequate equipment (for example, worn or unsuitable running shoes)
- Poor technique in performing activities
Sports-related injuries can be acute or they may progress to become very painful over time. Acute injuries are caused by sudden or unusual movements, for example, a muscle being injured suddenly or an ankle being badly sprained.
Chronic injuries from repetitive movements can develop over time, often due to poor technique or sometimes because of degenerative conditions. Many sports injuries do not require surgery and can be effectively managed with physiotherapy and a structured rehabilitation program.
